THE SELF-CUSTODY STARTER01 — 04
01 / THE BASICS

What is the Coinbase Wallet extension?

Think of it as a keyring for the decentralized web: a browser-based, self-custody wallet that lets you manage supported crypto assets and connect to web3 applications without leaving your desktop.

Coinbase Wallet is a separate product from the Coinbase centralized exchange account. The exchange is a platform where Coinbase holds assets on a customer’s behalf. With a self-custody wallet, you control the wallet’s private keys and are responsible for safeguarding access. The extension is designed to work in compatible desktop browsers, while Coinbase Wallet also has mobile experiences. Features and supported networks can change, so check Coinbase’s official product information for current availability.

That distinction matters. Self-custody gives you more direct control, but it also means there is no password-reset department that can restore a lost recovery phrase. The wallet interface can help you view assets, approve transactions, and connect to decentralized applications (dapps); it does not make blockchain transactions reversible or remove the risks of using crypto.

Quick distinction
Coinbase Wallet and a Coinbase exchange account are related products, but they are not the same account or the same custody model.

02 / GETTING STARTED

Install it carefully, then make a plan

Start from Coinbase’s official Wallet page and follow its link to the supported browser extension listing. Confirm the publisher and the address bar before installing. Searching the web for “wallet extension” can surface imitation pages or ads; never install a wallet from an unfamiliar download site or a link in an unsolicited message.

01

Verify the source

Navigate directly to the official Coinbase Wallet site. Use the extension-store link provided there, and check the publisher details.

02

Create or restore

Follow the wallet’s prompts to create a wallet or restore one you already control. Read each screen before continuing.

03

Secure recovery

Store the recovery phrase offline in a private, secure place. Anyone who obtains it may be able to control the wallet.

04

Try a small test

Before sending meaningful value, learn how addresses, network selection, and transaction fees work with a low-risk test.

There is no need to rush through setup. Use a strong device passcode, keep your browser and operating system updated, and avoid setting up a wallet on a shared or compromised computer. If you are restoring a wallet, make sure you are using the official extension and that no one can see what you enter.

It can help to decide in advance what the wallet is for. Some people keep a dedicated wallet for exploring unfamiliar applications and use another for longer-term holdings. Separate wallets do not eliminate risk, but they can make activity easier to review and limit the amount exposed to a single connection or approval.

!

Your recovery phrase is the master key.
Do not take a screenshot, paste it into a website, store it in email or cloud notes, or share it with anyone. Coinbase support will never need it.

03 / EXPLORE WITH INTENTION

What can you do with a browser wallet?

Once set up, a wallet extension can make it easier to interact with compatible dapps. Depending on supported assets, networks, and current product features, you may be able to view tokens, receive assets, send transactions, and connect to services such as decentralized exchanges, blockchain games, or digital collectible marketplaces.

Connecting a wallet is not the same as logging into a familiar website. A dapp may ask you to approve a connection, sign a message, or authorize a transaction. Read the request and understand what it does before confirming. A connection can reveal a public wallet address; a transaction can move assets or grant permissions. A signature may have consequences too, even when no funds appear to move immediately.

Networks are not interchangeable. An address may look similar across chains, but sending an asset on the wrong network can make it difficult or impossible to recover. Confirm the receiving address, network, asset, amount, and displayed fee every time. If something about the request is unexpected, reject it and verify through the project’s official channels.

Some applications may also ask for a token approval, which can authorize a contract to use a specific asset. Check what is being approved and whether the requested scope makes sense. Avoid clicking through transaction previews on autopilot; if you cannot explain the action in plain language, stop and research it first.

⌘

Connect

Approve a wallet connection only on a site you intended to visit.

⇄

Transact

Double-check the network, destination, amount, and fee before signing.

◉

Keep control

Review connected apps and revoke permissions you no longer need.

04 / SAFETY FIRST

Build safer wallet habits

A browser wallet is a powerful tool, not a guarantee of safety. Scammers often create urgency with fake airdrops, support messages, “account verification” pages, and links that imitate familiar brands. Treat unexpected requests as suspicious. Do not follow instructions from direct messages asking you to disclose a recovery phrase, install remote-access software, or sign an unfamiliar transaction.

Bookmark the official sites you use, verify URLs before connecting, and consider using a separate wallet for experimental apps. Keep only what you need in a wallet used for exploration. Use device security features, update software, and be cautious with browser extensions that can read or change page content. If you suspect a device or wallet is compromised, stop interacting and consult official support guidance from a trusted device.

Before approving a transaction, pause long enough to understand what is being requested. Crypto transfers are generally irreversible. Network fees vary, and token prices can fluctuate sharply. Never invest money you cannot afford to lose, and do your own research before using a protocol or asset. This guide is educational and is not investment, tax, or legal advice.

Good security is mostly a repeatable routine: check the domain, check the prompt, and check the details again before signing. Keep recovery information private, be skeptical of urgency, and use official documentation when you are uncertain. A few seconds of verification can prevent an expensive mistake.

05 / QUICK ANSWERS

Coinbase Wallet extension FAQs

Is Coinbase Wallet the same as Coinbase?

No. Coinbase Wallet is a self-custody product, while Coinbase’s exchange services use a different account and custody model. Check the official product documentation for the distinctions that apply in your region.

Can Coinbase recover my wallet?

In self-custody, you are responsible for your recovery phrase and access. If you lose the phrase, recovery may not be possible. Never give it to anyone claiming they can restore access.

Is the wallet extension free?

Installing a wallet may be free, but blockchain actions can involve network fees, and third-party services may charge their own fees. Review the details shown before approving any transaction.

How do I know I have the real extension?

Start at Coinbase’s official Wallet page and follow its extension-store link. Verify the publisher and store listing, and avoid sponsored search links, unsolicited messages, or third-party downloads.

Does a wallet connection give a site my funds?

A connection can expose your public address, but actions such as sending assets or granting token approvals require separate review and authorization. Read every prompt; disconnect and check permissions when finished.
